Training is not always the answer to business and performance problems. Training dollars are too scarce to be frittered away on programs and courses that might not pay off. Answering the above questions through an upfront analysis will help you decide if training is the solution. Surprisingly, however, many CEOs are reluctant to expend the effort on this front-end analysis. While obtaining answers will involve some time and resources, those expenditures are worthwhile if they prevent the needless spending of thousands of dollars on training that is not the right intervention.
• Could employees really do "X" if their lives depended on it? Do they really know how to do "X" but choose not to so for some reason?
• Could using a job aid solve the problem?
• Is the problem the result of an existing policy or procedure?

At the front of the room is a friend who is teaching meditation to the group. She smiles at me and says it’s fine that I’m there. I say that I’m tired, very tired. Someone sitting behind me props my back up as I sit to meditate with them. I feel nurtured being in that space. We meditate together.
We’re enjoying the vivid openness of the sand and sky and sharing stories when behind them in the distance, I see a huge tidal wave rolling along the sand towards us – maybe 100 feet high and towering ominously over the flat landscape. We turn and see another powerful wave rolling directly towards us from the opposite direction. We’re standing in the midst of these two oncoming waves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in an instant realize there’s nothing we can do.
Why does grief drown us? I reflect back on promises made to my dying husband 25 years before – “We’ll find each other again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” I whispered at his bedside just before his spirit slipped away. Two years later, I whispered the same words to my best childhood girlfriend, Crissie, who was dying of Leukemia at the age of 32. He whispers something else, but I can’t hear his words from the sound of the crashing waves. I wake up gasping for breath – still feeling their strong hands wrapped around mine – longing for that moment again, hearing their voices in my head, unable to get back to sleep. Do we always find each other again? Isn’t that endless longing the tyranny of grief? Or is it simply our limited perspective on time and space.
Recently, after several days of struggling with winkf-doubt and praying for guidance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I had this dream: I arrive at a lake and see my spiritual teacher standing on the shore. He tells me to walk through a passageway, and I do. I find myself winding through hallways and emerging into a large room - a simple open white space where several people are sitting on cushions.
My client nods. “He wants me to teach,” she says through her tears. In that moment, I see the spark in her, the life force, rekindling. We both feel it. She laughs softly.
“What’s the hardest part,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?” I asked her,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Yet, until our work is done,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our lifetime mission accomplished,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we can’t go home. And every moment we spend longing, instead of moving forward with our great work, is wasted time. I’m certainly guilty of that - creating a limbo of pain instead of just moving forward and getting the mission accomplished.
I believe this is our universal challenge – overcoming the “pitiful voice” that stops us all at the door of greatness.
I explain that she’s still here because she hasn’t accomplished her mission for this lifetime, and her partner is watching, patiently waiting for her to get to it. “You haven’t really lost each other,” I explain. “It’s just a shift of perspective,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a different dimension. Nothing is really lost.”
“Seeing it hurt my father,” she cried. How those words haunted me for years – that Crissie suffered not only from her disease, but from knowing how the grief would weigh down her loved ones.
Perhaps the pain of grief is really the pain of remembering our own home, our true nature, our divinity, and wanting to return there. Aren’t we simply longing for that divine realm again – where everything and everyone is luminous and connected?
Upon further discussion, she sees that there might be a way to use money from his estate to fund her return to graduate school so that she can move her career forward to get to the great work - the work that her pain has fueled her to do.

Later, I’m meditating on a new client. I ask if there are messages from the higher realms to help her move forward. In my meditation I see a gentleman, slumped-over and kind of embarrassed, slinking up to me. He mumbles, “Well it wasn’t that great when we were married. Tell her I’m sorry. Tell her she doesn’t need to be so angry. I see what I did. I’d like to help. There is money. Tell her to go to school.”
I write it all down for our session. Later when I’m working with her, I learn that her husband died and left a trail of sexual and physical abuse in the family. My client is very lost in her pain, grief, and anger. I give her the messages from her departed husband. She is slightly amused that he’s slinking around apologizing.
But by going to our higher winkf through meditation, prayers, and dreams, we do find our courage again. In fact, that’s often the most powerful way to reverse a negative cycle. Here’s an example:
“Don’t worry,” whispers my Uncle Pete. “We always find each other.”
As I say this, I get chills over my entire body – a sign that I’ve tuned into something for her. “Do you know that your partner watches you struggle? I ask her gently.
Her great shame, that has weighed her down for years, has been that her husband abused the children. She is beginning to see that this is also the great fuel that fires her passion to help others. She looks into graduate school and later tells me, “I feel more clear-headed and focused than I have in years. Thank you so much.”
“Let’s talk about how to make that happen,” I whisper. Months later she writes, “You encouraged me to fulfill the mission for my life, and I’m getting to it. I’ve woken up.”
Grieving clients constantly seek me out. They fill my appointment book. Maybe they sense I can help them find their footing in the midst of swirling waters. Today, my client tells me about her partner who recently died. She hasn’t been able to move forward and is lost in her depression. She needs to make a living, yet she’s drowning in pain.
And most of the time we look to the wrong sources for comfort, when we’re lost in our “pitiful winkf.” It takes courage to focus on the higher winkf, the divinity, the unseen realms for guidance - instead of looking to our peers for approval and support.
I grab their hands. “How will we remember?” I ask staring into their eyes. “How will we find each other again?”

Use of questions can help you enormously in your workshop. Questions help get and keep a conversation going. Questions can also clarify a participant’s comment, this is especially helpful in building rapport.
Structured, step by step practice is essential for effective learning. Build practice activities into every training session when possible. Practice sessions are especially effective in skills training.
The best ways to establish rapport with the groups, is to learn their names, make eye contact, and encourage participation. Create a non-threatening environment, let everyone speak their piece, while keeping an eye on time.
The “Open Circle” configuration is a very effective one. Participants would be seated in a horseshoe pattern at various round tables in the room. This configuration allows the participants to face the front of the room, where the trainer is. This set up works very for between 8 and 60 participants.
Square Configurations (Open or Closed) with participants sitting around on all four sides, are effective for 20 participants or less, and work well for group discussion and team development activities.
Another tool that becomes very personal and allows you to get close to your trainees, is flip charts. Flip charts are a great way to stress certain points, to demonstrate things graphically, and a great way to get people working in group and team activities. Make use of flip charts whenever you can.
Before we can conduct any workshop training effectively, we need to know how adults learn, so that we can apply some very practical principles to our training.
People learn well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when they are motivated. Anything that you can do to motivate or encourage people to embrace the training will enhance its value. Some things that you can do are: stress the importance of training,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], emphasize the importance of on-going development, and emphasize the investment that the company is making in the trainees. Training needs to be motivational to be effective, it should not be like army boot camp.
Recognition of the differences amongst trainees and customization of the training to fit the trainees needs, is the best approach. Well designed winkf study materials (CBT, videos, manuals, books), can be very effective, because trainees can use them at their own pace, and they take into account different trainee learning styles.
Whichever room set up or configuration that you decide on is up to you, but try to fit it to the program, the number of participants, and also how much space you have. It is a really important factor that can set the tone of the training.
Conducting effective workshops is one of the constant challenges facing all trainers. We will try to look at the most effective ways to conduct workshops, ways that will make the workshops not only valuable for the attendees, but valuable and rewarding for trainers too.
Facilitating the Training
Feedback on the results of training is critical. Feedback on how achieved performance compares to the standards of performance, is very important.
Effective Use of Selected Training Tools
Difficult people in workshops usually take on two different forms. There are those who do not participate at all, and those who participate too much and constantly challenge you. For those who do not participate, ask them questions to get them involved and have them speak about their experiences, make them team leaders, so they have to be more involved.
Emphasizing how training can apply to other situations (ie, real world) is a critical element. Demonstrating this relationship, and how the training can be applied to everyday work situations, brings value to training.
Role- plays are one of the most effective tools in any workshop. Remember, adults learn best from doing, so what better way than role-plays. Role- plays provide a great opportunity to practice skills, knowledge and techniques. Role-plays are realistic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and bring the real world to you’re your training workshop. If you can video tape your role-plays,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even better yet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since it provides good instant feedback. Role-plays are an important part of a workshop.
The last workshop tool that I want to mention is games. Games are a lot of fun and everyone enjoys them. Games get a lot of participation from the group, and games make people laugh, and we all know that laughter is healthy. We will look at some training tools that can be used very effectively in workshop situations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], flip charts, video projectors and computers (Power Point Presentations), overhead projectors, transparencies, video cassettes, role-plays, simulations, small team activities, games, etc.
Basic Principles of Adult Learning
Power Point has really changed the world for trainers and all business people alike. What a great tool,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you can put together presentations on short notice and if you do them yourself, virtually at no cost. This is a great training tool that you can and should use, but use it wisely, and don’t make your workshop an entire Power Point slide lecture. The Power Point presentation is most effective when run through a video or LCD projector.
We will look at things that you can do in each of these areas to make your workshops more effective.
I like to use as many different training tools as possible in workshops. In fact, I find that the more of them that you use, the more effective the training is. Different tools, different activities, all make for a session that has a lot of flow and movement, and thus avoids participant boredom.
Simulations are another great tool that you can use, in workshops. Basically there are two types of simulations, paper and pencil, non computerized simulations, and computer based simulations. The paper and pencil simulations usually begin with a specific environment, such as a doctor’s office or a sales rep’s territory. Then problems based on the simulated environment are developed to help the participants practice skills. These simulations frequently contain large amounts of data in the form of a case study or “Data Book.” The participants usually work in small teams , groups of four to six people, to solve the situation. There is usually a “scoring system,” so that participants can get feedback on their decisions.
Diagonally angled rectangular or square tables with participants facing the front of the room, is almost as good as the open circle configuration, it too can handle between 8 and 60 participants.
The last tool that I am particularly fond of is videocassettes. I cannot imagine conducting any type of workshop without video. Video brings life to workshop training sessions. The ideal way is with custom designed videos for products,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], skills, etc., but there is a whole slew of off the shelf videos, many in different languages, that cover a wide range of topics. Take your video, some Power Point slides, flip charts with some group exercises, and you have an entire workshop.
Facilitating and running the training, is a critical part that you can play and control in every workshop. There are three basic things that you need to do, to run an effective workshop:
· Establish rapport with the group
· Use questions
· Know how to handle difficult participants
Computer based simulations are the latest craze, they work very well in a workshop environment. Since these simulations are computerized you are able to process large amounts of data very quickly and project business activities over a few years time span. The computer based simulations lend an air of objectivity to your training workshop activities, if you have the budget, use them.
Arranging the Training Room Environment
Rows of tables or rows of chairs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all facing the leader in the front of the room are good for formal presentations and large groups.

I particularly like overhead transparencies for meetings with small groups of people – 8 or less. I also like overhead transparencies for group or team work activities, where each group or team needs to present to the entire class.
In order to conduct training workshops effectively, we need to consider the following elements:
· Basic Principles of Adult Learning
· Arranging the Training Room Environment
· Effective use of Selected Training Tools
· Facilitating the Training
The chronological order in which the material is presented is very important. It is a good idea to present simpler easier topics, before moving on to more difficult topics. The best method of training also needs to be considered. As a general rule of thumb, winkf-study materials are better for knowledge, and skills are best taught through practice sessions, role-plays, and workshops.
Active trainee participation also enhances training effectiveness. Team activities, role plays, group exercises, all contribute to training. Remember, adults learn best by doing, so keep the slide lecture presentations to a minimum.
Matching the training room to the type of training program, can increase overall training effectiveness. An example of this is, tables and chairs arranged in classroom style, conveys a message of formal training. Various round tables with chairs around them, convey an environment of teamwork and problem solving. Which environment do you prefer? Selection of the training room set up depends on a variety of factors, such as: the program objectives, number of participants, activities involved (team exercises, role plays, etc.).
When you have participants who do too much and challenge you, let the group handle them, turn their questions/ideas over to the group for comment. Put them to work, let them head up a team or group.

A friend once remarked I was a wonderful role model for how to live a great life despite suffering from depression. At the time, I was unable to see the value in that since, the ultimate goal is to be depression free - isn't it? Suffering from depression means we’re flawed, right? At first sight this might appear discouraging. The thought of living your whole life with the spectre of depression is not a happy one. But I believe that the 3 phase model actually increases your chances of becoming Depression free,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

After several trips out of depression and then descending into the pit of despair over and over again I began to wonder whether or not I'd ever be completely free of depression and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more importantly, whether or not it really matters.
Finding yourself at phase I is a backward experience if you're living according to the 2 stage model. While you are depression free you feel successful and positive. Slipping back into depression makes you feel you've failed again and thus adds to your depression.
~ Phase I - Depressed
~ Phase II - Period of Remission
~ Phase III - Depression Free
~ How do you know when it is time to live happily ever after?
The ultimate aim is to get from I to II and stay there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Then you can live happily ever after.

It is normal for her to believe that way because of her repeated experiences. Her past experiences have created those beliefs in her and she begins to “see” her clients as complaining and demanding and eventually “expects” them to be complaining and demanding. As she becomes a “victim” to her beliefs, she emits “victim” energy and attracts clients whose energy fulfills those beliefs and expectations: clients who are complaining and demanding. Our thoughts translate to emotions. Together they affect our actions. Our actions determine the results and what we experience. Our experience influences our beliefs and perceptions. Our beliefs and perceptions program our thoughts. Thus are born habits and default tendencies that either contribute to our success or lack thereof.
